Read before viewing—January 8, 2010
Now that it’s 2010, its time to start reading some books that are soon to be arriving in theatre’s as movies. It seems that most movies nowadays are based off books, and there are quite a few movies coming out in the first few months of this year that are based off of popular books. Hastings Public Library is your place to stop for all these books that you can read before you go to see the movie.
For adult readers try “Shutter Island” by Dennis Lehane. This novel is about a U.S. Marshal who goes to Shutter Island, the home of a mental hospital for the criminally insane, to track down an escaped patient. The film of will star Leonardo Dicaprio as Teddy Daniels, the U.S. Marshal, and is due to hit theatres this February.
For all you Nicholas Sparks fans, there will be two movies coming out that are based off of his novels. First in February there is “Dear John” about army recruit John, who meets Savannah while in the army. They fall in love but after 9/11 John feels that he needs to reenlist to serve his country, will Savannah wait for him? The movie stars Channing Tatum as John and Amanda Seyfried as Savannah. Then in April “The Last Song” hits theatre’s. This film based off his most recent book of the same name is about Veronica “Ronnie” Miller (played in the movie by Miley Cyrus) whose parents are getting divorced. Ronnie a New Yorker must spend her summer with her father in Wilmington, North Carolina, where she encounters many different types of unexpected love.
Teens that love the book “The Lightning Thief,” by Rick Riordan have something to be excited about, the movie comes out in February and has many famous actors such as Pierce Brosnan and Uma Thurman. The novel is about a boy named Percy Jackson, who finds out that he is the son of the Greek god Poseidon. After this shocking news Percy gets involved in a quest where he must find the lost lightning bolt of Zeus, and must face many obstacles alone the way such as Medusa and the Minotaur.
And for children and families, look for “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” based off the novel of the same name written by Jeff Kinney. These books are very popular here at the library and the movie is sure to be a hit with the kids.
“Youth in Revolt” by C.D. Payne will also be hitting theatre’s soon, as well as the children’s classic “Alice in Wonderland,” by Lewis Carroll. Check out any of these great books from HPL and be sure to see the movies when they come to a theatre near you!
