Library full of Disney films, books —June 28, 2013
Summer is here once again and the kids are all home from school. Since they have a break, why not bring them in to the Hastings Public Library to check out a Disney book or movie. I always loved Disney movies when I was a kid. The library has many of the movies and a lot of books based on the films.
The first Disney film I remember seeing was The Little Mermaid. It came out in theaters when I was 2 and was actually the first movie I ever saw in a movie theater. This classic tale is about Ariel a mermaid who falls in love with a prince and makes a deal with the sea witch, Ursula to become human. If you are a fan of the Little Mermaid, be sure to check out the Hastings Community Theatre children’s production of the stage version that will run July 10 through the 13th at the Community theatre.
Try other Disney classics such as Beauty and the Beast. This story revolves around Belle an inventor’s daughter who makes a deal with a monstrous beast to save her father. Through the course of the story Belle falls in love with the beast and he become human once again.
Many Disney films are based off of fairy tales, like Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid. However some are also based off of classic novels like Tarzan. Based on the novel, Tarzan of the Apes, by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Tarzan is a story about a boy who parents die in a plane crash, and is later found by a group of apes who raise him.
Another novel based Disney movie is The Hunchback of Notre Dame, based on the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo. Quasimodo is an outcast who lives in the bell tower of Notre Dame cathedral. He falls in love with the gypsy Esmeralda and must save her from his evil guardian. Many of the novel based Disney movies like Hunchback of Notre Dame deviate greatly from the novel on which they are based, but in most cases this is due to content, to make the movies more kid friendly.
Check out these and other great Disney movies and books at the Library.
