Popular books coming to movie screen near you—October 29, 2010
The holiday season is almost here and with it comes the holiday movie season. These next few months, many popular books will find their way on to big screens everywhere. Stop by Hastings Public Library to check out the books before you see the movies. Try “Between a Rock and a Hard Place” by Aron Ralston. This is the true story of Aron Ralsotn a mountain climber who made national news when he cut off his own arm to escape being trapped between rocks while on a climbing excursion. The film version is titled “127 Hours” and stars James Franco as Ralston.
Also coming to theatres is a remake of “True Grit.” This remake of the classic film starring John Wayne will be closer to the original novel by Charles Portis. “True Grit” is the story of fourteen year old Maddie Ross who sets out during the winter to avenge the death of her father who was killed by an outlaw. The new film is directed by the Coen brothers and stars Matt Damon and Jeff Bridges.
For Shakespeare fans there will be a new film version of his play “The Tempest.” “The Tempest” is the tale of Prospero who is banished to a deserted island with his daughter Miranda. Prospero creates a tempest that wrecks a ship of sailors who were responsible for his banishment. In this new film Prospero is now Prospera and will be played by Helen Mirren.
Families will enjoy “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” the third Narnia film based on the novel by C.S. Lewis. In this installment Lucy and Edmund Pevensie and their cousin Eustace Scrubb are pulled into the magical land of Narnia by an enchanted painting. The three children must help King Caspian find the seven lords of Narnia who were banished by an evil former king.
One of the biggest film releases of the holiday season will be the first part of the final “Harry Potter” films. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” by J.K. Rowling tells the story of Harry Potter’s hunt for several lost Horcruxes to help him face off against the evil lord Voldermort. To help get ready for the new film Hastings Public Library will be showing the three most recent Harry Potter films. November 4th the library will show “The Goblet of Fire” at 7pm, November 11th “The Order of the Phoenix” at 7pm. Finally on November 18th “The Half-Blood Prince will be shown following the festival of lights to prepare for the midnight premiere of the new film.
