Go into Overdrive with non-fiction this summer—July 30, 2010
I love fiction. The only non-fiction titles that I usually read are cookbooks. I have tried to read non-fiction but just couldn’t get interested in them, until now. I was going on a trip and wanted to take a book, but space was limited so I thought that I would use my MP3 player and download books from the Nebraska Overdrive. All the books that I wanted were checked out, so I started looking at the non-fiction.
I found a book that I tried to read earlier this year and thought perhaps I should try the audio version of it. So I checked out and downloaded “I am Ozzy” by Ozzy Osbourne. I was very surprised by this book. It made me laugh and cry and say “WOW”. The book spanned his whole life from childhood to the present. I knew that he had a problem with addiction and had tried to walk away from the habit several times but I never knew what he and his family had gone through. At the end of the audio book there is a question and answer time with Ozzy Osbourne and a reporter which was a very nice way to end the book.
The other book that I downloaded was “Made From Scratch: A Memoir” by Sandra Lee. I have watched Sandra Lee on the Food Network and knew that as a young child she and her family had struggled with not having enough food. But, that book told me she had overcome more adversity than wondering where their next meal was coming from. This book was definitely a tissue reading book, I cried and cheered her on as she spoke of the difficulties that she had faced as a young women. More than once she pulled herself up, brushed herself off and kept moving forward. She ended the book with a very uplifting passage to young girls. In this passage she tells them that they can accomplish anything that they set their minds to.
If you are like me and just can’t get through the first chapter of a non-fiction book, but you really want to read one I highly recommend Nebraska Overdrive and a good audio book. To learn more about Overdrive or downloadable books, ask any staff member for help.
