Celebrate Friday the 13th—September 13, 2013
Happy Friday the 13th!!! I know it’s strange, most people are leery of Friday the 13th, but I prefer to indulge myself and have fun…they only come about once or twice a year. In fact, this is the first one since July of last year! In response to such a long dry spell between Friday’s, I have some suggestions on how you can celebrate…actually I have 16 suggestions, all of which are now available at the library!
I have not always been a fan of scary movies. In fact, I refused to even be in the same room as one playing for the longest time. My older brother used to torture me by making me watch them when I was little, and he even had a My Buddy doll (you know, the 80’s toy that was basically the Chucky “Good Guy” doll.) He used to torment me by putting the doll in my bed, or chase me around the house with it! Then in Middle School one of my best friends talked me into watching “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” I was terrified, but they promised they would stop the movie if I got too scared. Funny thing, Freddy got a lot less scary and a lot funnier over the years. Needless to say, I overcame my fear and have been hooked ever since.
As with any good thing in the world, there’s always a good feud to go along with it. Out of all the horror icons, Freddy vs. Jason is deemed the most argumentative. Personally, I love to argue it. Obviously Freddy is the superior choice. 1) He’s already dead, so you can’t kill him. Jason is human, so you can kill him...true he can be brought back from the dead, but only with help from an outside source. 2) Freddy has brains! He’s witty, and creative…he puts some effort into capturing his prey. Jason just wanders around bloodthirsty and destroys whatever he comes across with brute force. 3) Freddy has a goal in mind. Every single one of his movies, no matter how cheesy, has the same goal: destroy all the elm street kids. Jason on the other hand just destroys whatever he comes across. Most of the time there is a camp related scenario…but not always. Stop by the library sometime and give me your opinion, I’d love to hear your rebuttal.
I could go on, but I say this Friday the 13th…decide for yourself! The library is now proud owners of Friday the 13th part 1 through Manhattan, and the entire Nightmare on Elm street series. On top of all that fun, for the dedicated fans, we also have the documentary “Never Sleep Again” which is a must see for any Nightmare fan, and also gives some insight into who really won at the end of Freddy vs. Jason. (Just because Jason walked out of the water, doesn’t mean he won…Freddy was clearly still alive.) There is also another one out called “His name was Jason” which goes into the Friday the 13th series. I haven’t seen it yet, but I imagine it’s good.
Whatever your desire, have a wonderful Friday the 13th! And if you don’t have time to celebrate, no worries we have another one coming up in December.
