Wonderful books worth checking out—March 25, 2011
Making a library function at its best requires much behind the scenes work on the part of many people. One of the tasks I work on when I’m not at the desk is called weeding. What weeding basically means is that books are evaluated as to whether they are worth the shelf space they are using. For example, if a book hasn’t been checked out in many years, or is in bad shape, or has outdated information, it will often be removed to make room for something that has more appeal to patrons.
Certainly not all patrons will want books on skill saws, routers or blacksmithing; that’s understandable. Even Welding Principles, How To Make PVC Pipe Furniture, and Spinning Wheel Primer wouldn’t be of interest to many. Yet, there are so many other fantastic books that you’d probably like if you just knew about them.
One of my favorites in this section is a book titled Great 2x4 Accessories For Your Home. This title might invoke thoughts of huge planks of lumber sitting around in the garage. What it actually is about is making nifty things for your home. Details include: the materials you will need, hardware to purchase, and the cutting list and plan for projects such as a cedar keepsake box, a wine cabinet, a desk organizer, or a kitchen island topper. Complete instructions are given, and the projects range from fairly simple to complex.
Great Looking 2x4 Furniture goes beyond the Accessories book to show how to build a corner cabinet, an armoire, a kitchen or buffet table, a cabinet, or even a headboard.
There is even a woodworking book especially for women. The title is Easy Weekend Wood Projects. Some of the nifty projects are: a breadbox, chair, sofa table, and trellis.
If building something is your thing, you have to check out Building Arts & Crafts Furniture, where you can learn how to make a gorgeous slatted flat-arm Morris chair; or The Country Furniture Book, which provides patterns and detailed instructions for making such items as a buffet hutch or slat-back chairs.
These are a few of the fabulous books available for you to check out and use. Also, you can browse the shelves or card catalogue to find your next fun hobby, project or interest.
